Yes I Trick My Kids But It’s Good For Them, Honest

August 11, 2011

If you are a parent or in charge of making kids eat you will feel me when i say it can be really hard and frustrating to get them to eat what you want them to eat.

My kids – particularly Big P has always been a very picky eater. He likes what he likes and he always has hated mixed textured foods. Mixing textures like creamy and crunchy or smooth or ones that make “pop” noises will always lead him to refusing his dinner.  Babe E and Princess R are both a little bit picky the same way but not as bad as Big P.

Getting any of them to eat veggies can be hard.  Especially if we are having something like pasta or burgers.  Pasta usually has the veggies in the sauce/noodle and burgers will usually be topped with some form of veggie. Kids will not allow this in their dinner.

So being all “mom” I got worried that they were not getting enough veggies.  I was tired of the fight I always got when i put the veggies in their dinner.

That was until I decided to trick the. To be sneaky & they have yet to figure this out.

I became best friends with my food grater.

Using most types of veggies like onions, sweet peppers, carrots, celery and i put those grated veggies in everything.  Spaghetti, hamburgers, pizza are all ones that i have tried and my VERY picky kids have not noticed and will eat.  Big P even hates carrots but has yet to complain.

It has been a life saver for me. There are some veggies that my kids will always seem to eat (like broccoli, go figure) but they need variety.  No more food battles and no more worrying about my kids not getting enough veggies.

That’s a great idea! I have trouble getting my 1yo to eat veggies (even though she used to eat them all as a “baby”). So, we started making her peanut butter and puréed broccoli sandwiches!

We also put spinach purée in her scrambled eggs. Green eggs! :)

Thanks for the tips! I’m whipping out the grater tonight!

Yes! Peppers, carrots, spinach, celery, onion, tomato – after food processing, added to anything, they’re totally under the radar!

A momma’s gotta do what a momma’s got to do and I think your method is brilliant.

I’ve been blessed with non-picky eaters so they eat just about every veggie I put in front of them. They LOVE to eat salad.

My kid loves his veggies. Seriously. Asparagus is his favorite food ever. I’ve never had a problem getting him to eat them.

My problem is getting him to eat when I want him to. He’s always been a snacker, not a meal-eater. Although he is getting enough food & it’s healthy food, so I can’t be too worried about it.

I do this all the time! Please do not tell my husband… haha
It’s shocking how much flavor and extra nutrients you can pack into food without even realizing it. Great tip!
