Homemade Taco Bowl Recipe

I am a HUGE fan of all Mexican food and I really mean that. I could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner and not get sick of it — ever. Tacos and all variations of tacos is one of my favourite things and since going gluten free five years ago, I have mainly stuck to corn hard shelled tacos that I can buy at the store (or tostadas, which we are also all about).

For Christmas, my grandma got me a tortilla press — for the life of me I couldn’t find one here so she sent one to me from the States and I have been addicted to it since. I now enjoy amazing homemade soft shelled tacos and everything else you can do with a tortilla wrap. This past weekend, I got the craving for taco salad, but of course I was also in the mood to be slightly creative and thought … hmmm, why not make my own taco bowls.

It was so easy & I did it without deep frying them so they are healthier too!

Gluten Free Taco Bowl Salad

*Makes about 12 small tortillas

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups masa harina
  • 1 cup water
  • olive oil
  • tortilla press
  • muffin tin; upside down

Directions

  1. In a bowl mix together water and masa harina until makes a firm ball. If dough is too sticky, add more masa ; if it begins to dry out, sprinkle with water.
  2. Divide dough into 12 equal-size balls. Using a tortilla press, press each ball of dough flat between two sheets of plastic wrap or parchment paper
  3. Preheat oven to 375F
  4. Grab a muffin tin and flip over so you\'re using the bottom. Lightly grease the bottom with olive oil and drape a tortilla over top, pinching around the edges to make a bowl shape.
  5. Place in the oven for 20 minutes
  6. Remove from oven and let sit until cooled down. That way they wont lose their bowl shape.
  7. If you wish to keep it healthier, use the bowl to serve up your taco salad; if you want it crispier, deep fry each bowl separately in vegetable oil until crisp

Oooh, I want a tortilla press too. Hope I can find one. Might have to take a drive to Buffalo.
We’re big fans of Mexican style food here too.

If you have an authentic mexican restaurant near you – ask them where they purchase. One near me actually sells them in their restaurant
