Since my son was about 4 months old I noticed he was very peculiar about his hands. He would run his hands over different fabrics, textures and temperatures. When he got a little bit older he was very particular about what was on his hands. He did not like to touch anything that was slightly too warm or slightly too cold and he was against anything sticky, dirty or pressure on his hands.
He is now 5 years old and he is still that way – but also about his neck and feet now too. It was never really any trouble because most of the time at home he preferred to wear particular shirts and never wore pants and most situations that made him “uncomfortable” {read: tantrum like epically!} were for the most part avoidable.
Until this year when he started part time school. He hates pants with tags, buttons or zippers. Hate any shirts that are too tight around his neck or have the tag tickling him at the back and if his socks are not lined up (the seams) perfectly, are tight around his feet and soft – he will not be pleased.
I didn’t realize there was anything I could do about this to make it easier on him & me.
Sensory Store Canada founded by Lori Brienesse-Frank – a mother to a son who has autism (sensory issues are common in autistic individuals) searched high and low for socks that her son could wear and she started a store to share with other Canadian parents seeking the same comfort for their children. Sensory Store Canada is Canada’s only source for Soft® brand clothing:
the first line of inclusive clothing designed with the needs of all children in mind, including those with Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder, ADHD, and tactile defensiveness/sensitivity. We use flat seaming and seamless construction for extra comfort, 100% of the softest combed cotton and our specially developed Soft Sensory Blends , wide collars, encased elastic waistbands, printed labels (tagless), custom fits, and much more.
I had the opportunity to try some of the clothing out on my son & my 3yr old daughter who does not have any sensory/textile issues & not only is the clothing gorgeous – it is everything it claims to be.
I was very impressed with the quality of the clothing, the softness & the way my son responded to them. My daughter was also a big fan of the clothing & commented on how soft and comfortable they are.
