Rant: Manners? Common Sense? Anyone?!

October 8, 2010

I love going to the grocery store. Something I have always loved since I was little and my mom would tote my brothers and sister out with her on a bi-weekly basis.  I go almost every day with the 3 kids in toe and we get our food for a day or two – our daily walk.
We go early in the day. It is quiet and open and stress free.  That is until a long weekend is approaching and everyone seems to be running around like they have their head cut off or that they are the only person in the world who has shit to do and no time to do it. Where does everyone’s manner and common sense go when they are in the grocery store?! Do they have it at all or is it really something about the grocery shopping that makes people act like this?
I was out with the kids today like every day except this weekend is a long weekend – Thanksgiving here in Canada. I am always shocked by people and the blinders they have on where they are the only people in the world.  I was raised to have manners, common sense and to be aware of others around me.  What happened to all these other people?!

On our walk we had cars running red lights as we were crossing the street, people making right hand turns when we were crossing the street, people zooming past the cross walk when it was our right of way.  That was just on our walk to the store.  Inside is a whole different world on a long weekend. You would think that these people have to hunt for their food.  People taking up whole aisles, pushing past people, blocking entrances and exits, butting in line, running into kids, just generally being selfish and blind.
No manners, no courtesy.
I hate going to the store when it is busy.  All i see are people at their worst and I really wonder if it is the store or the society.

It's our society. Rush, rush, rush. Everyone has somewhere to be that is the most important! It's not the store….it's not you…it's not the polite, well mannered citizens. It's the gotta be first, gotta be the best mentality.

Oy! My biggest grocery store pet peeve is when people think they're the only person in the entire store and manage to block an entire aisle with their grocery cart! And then, when they see you approach they don't make any move to get out of the way until they're done with what they're doing. RUDE!

I love going grocery shopping and I HATE that! I swear people grocery shopping are completely oblivious to those around then. I go out of my way to be aware of others around me while I'm grocery shopping. I also cannot stand going the first weekend of the month when foodstamp cards get loaded up. I understand there are people out there that need/use assistance but I feel like they are some of the biggest offenders of being completely rude.

Ok, my rant is now over.

I hear you. Groceries store, wal-mart and Costco make me want to scream. People go in seriously thinking they own the store and no one else is there. I try to avoid holiday times. This year though we have to do a big grocery shop this week-end as I will be car less for a week and do not live within walking distance to a grocery store. Please send me strength to deal with the holiday stupidity of society.

we go once a week on friday to gear up for the week. to say the whole experience is displeasing would be an understatement. generally its a huge pain in the ass, but you have to eat right?

in canada they lock the grocery carts…you need some form of change to get one which is returned once you've replaced the cart. but even though this never changes i always forget the cart change, which either results in overloading the stroller, (i've ripped the basket now three times), or returning all the way home for a quarter.

Maybe, after this comment….I'll remember, well at least today I'll remember.

Circus: lame cart change! The grocery store i go to does not have the "pay for cart" thingy thank goodness cause that would make me crazy. so, not all stores in Canada do that :) We do have to pay if we want plastic bags. REMINDER: Cart change ;)

I live in a small town with no more than 3000 people. There is no Wal-mart and no Super Store. We have 2 grocery stores and though sometimes it gets crowded people are usually considerate! I guess, I'm just lucky :)

People just don't have any manners anymore. It's so irritating. I go sometimes on $10 off day with my son and people are always cutting us off.

Oh my, I am just like you! I LOVE going to Costco or the grocery store but I can't stand it when it is busy!

Despite my love affair with Costco I always feel ripped off when I leave! The bills are SO high – you'd think I bought the store. I think that is my pet peeve.

earningcheaperwhat it doesn’t say is that you are using more fuel to cook these things. You are also using up time which yoou could be using more money.Maybe the uacerdlnss are right. It is to live on a diet of soda pop, potato chips, pretzels and candy bars. That way you need never do any cooking. You will save money. And no dishes to wash either.

Oh geeze, I could probably wax poetic (or not hah) about this for HOURS. I hate how people are rude, don't pay attention, block aisles, dump things in random places (ice cream does NOT belong in the cereal aisle), and.. wow, I could write a list of a hundred things. One of my biggest peeves is the idiots who ram their cart into you. Now, that hurts anyway, but I have psoriasis, and even a bump can rip my skin open and will cause me agony.

However, tonight I was at the store for a few minutes, and what struck me the hardest was how ANGRY everybody seemed. I saw at LEAST five kids being yelled at in the store, and for really stupid reasons. One whose mother was berating him for not getting the right milk fast enough (looked to be maybe 9 years old?), one who apparently pointed at something and asked a question only to be told to shut up, and so on. I really sorta want to grab those parents and shake them, not that it would help.

That's how society is. I'm constantly trying to be the nice one and I get tired of it, but then I look at the babe in the cart and only hope that he picks up on my manners because he isn't seeing it anywhere else.

Yes, I hate shopping on the weekends! Especially when people bring TONS of kids, each with their own carts, and they don't look out for other people at all, clog up the whole aisle.

Are pet peeve when going to the grocery store is ppl who don't know how to use the automatic checkout, or take a cart full through the automatic checkout, (it is 15 items or less…)
