Gluten Free Orange Beef with Fried Rice

Orange Beef and Fried Rice
This week I thought I would try something new and cook up some Chinese food for the family.  Nearly impossible to find gluten free Chinese food near where I live so it’s something I do miss eating.
Orange Beef:

Ingredients:

  • 1lb beef sirloin (thinly sliced cut into strips)
  • 2 Tbs soy sauce
  • 1 Tbs + 1 tsp corn starch
  • 1/2 tsp ground pepper
  • zest from 2 oranges
  • 2 garlic cloves (minced)
  • 2 tsp fresh ground ginger
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 2 Tbs sugar
  • 2 Tbs white wine
  • 1 Tbs hoisin (gluten free or homemade)
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 3 cups vegetable oil

Directions:

  1. In a bowl, toss the meat with 2 Tbs soy sauce, 1 Tbs corn starch and the pepper. Marinate the meat at room temperature for 1 hour.
  2. Combine orange zest, garlic and finger in a small bowl and set aside.
  3. In another bowl combine 1Tbs soy sauce, 1 tsp corn starch with the orange juice, sugar, wine, hoisin and sesame oil.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a wok or pot. Add handful of beef into the oil one piece at a time. Cook for 2 minutes or until crispy and brown. Transfer with a slotted spoon to paper towels to drain. Repeat with remaining beef. Discard oil.
  5. Add the zest, garlic mixture to wok and cook for 1 minute. Stir in the orange juice mixture alone with the fried beef. Stir until sauce thickens (about 3 minutes).

That looks really good! My sister just (yesterday) started gluten free and is having a rough time figuring out what to eat, I'll send her your way!

Hmmm…do you think that would work with tofu? It looks so yummy, but the vegan in our house would cringe!

Oh, that sounds and looks soooo good!! My absolute favorite Chinese food is sesame chicken…but there's also a local place that makes great "naked" (i.e. no breading) almond chicken.

Thank you so much for coming by on my TMC feature day and for making it special!

Thanks for your comments :)

Susie – i bet it would work great with firm tofu! The flavors and texture would work well with it!

That sounds excellent – my stomach is growling :-) My mom tries to eat gluten-free and sometimes I think I should give it a try, too. Maybe your blog will motivate me! :-) Thanks for stopping by my blogsite last week and leaving the comment on my home video with my son!

Cheri

Im eating gluten free because my second child and I have Celiac Disease – an autoimmune disorder that reacts to gluten causing a wide range of issues. Being on a gluten free diet is the only treatment :)

Thanks for stopping in!

I remember having a camper who was gluten-free (I don't remember the reason) and all her food looks so… dry. I always felt badly for her. This looks really good! And simple to make too.
