Product Review: Newtons No Gluten Bread

January 3, 2010

Anyone who has had Gluten Free Bread knows that in order to make it at all edible and similar to wheat bread (texture wise) it needs to be toasted.

I have LONGED for a sandwich that i don’t have to toast – so when i heard about a local store that sells gluten free products – AND that they have their own gluten free bakery right on location – i had to check it out.

Portions Distinctive Meals and More is a family run business and it really shows. The staff is unbelievably knowledgeable and very helpful. When i waked into the store i was given a tour of where to find all the gluten free stuff and how they mark their labels (they also have other allergy free products).

I was there on a mission to get a loaf of their fresh gluten free bread and some of their gluten free summer sausage (another AMAZING find!). They have a lot of other products available (desserts and frozen dinners) but i haven’t checked those out yet. The fresh bread ranged from $7-9 a loaf and the summer sausage was around the same price you would find in a large grocery store.

The bread really lived up to the hype! I cut into it and knew right away – the texture was really similar – just the right crumble and very moist. The sandwich was SO worth it! My husband (not a celiac) said that the bread was much better then his regular gluten-filled bread!!

The next visit they didn’t have any fresh bread left (i have since been informed it’s best to call ahead so they will save a loaf) so i tried their frozen White Rice Loaf. I defrosted it by leaving it on the counter (the staff said its the best way) and it made a good sandwich. The only thing wrong with the frozen loaf is that it did not stay moist the next day and was much more crumbly. It costs the same as the fresh loaf.

The website for Portions (www.portionscanada.com) has a baking list right on the front page with which breads they are making fresh on each day – very helpful since they recommend you call ahead so they can save you some.

So, anyone looking for a gluten free sandwich you honestly DON’T have to toast – check out Portions in Guelph!
