My Self Esteem Was Under Attack This Week

July 21, 2011

One of the biggest things that I love about children is their innocence. Discovering new things through their eyes and seeing the world with a brand new slate is one of the most magical things you can witness.  They are constantly learning and everything they discover is new to them.

Sometimes that innocence can blow up in your face though.

It did for me this week … three times.

My kids have not yet learned an important thing called the ‘social filter‘. They love to say whatever comes to their mind and at 5, 4 & 2 years old that it totally normal and i had to remind myself of that this week as they opened their mouths & these three conversations came out:

1. Big P, who visited the dentist last week & has been very into teeth, turned to me and said “Mom your one tooth is pushed in, why?”  {& i then tried to explain that sometimes people don’t have perfectly aligned teeth}

2. Princess R and i were cuddling on the couch and she put her and on my stomach… then she started to poke my stomach – then she turned her head to me and said, “Mommy your tummy is all giggly” {& i then tried to explain that my stomach is a bit soft because i grew three big babies in there}

3. Last night was my weekly Girls Night and i was getting ready upstairs.  I actually put on a dress and had my hair clean and styled. You can usually find me in track pants and a t shirt so this was a different look for me. As i walk down the stairs i can see i have caught Princess R’s eye and before i get down the flight of stairs she asks me “Mommy why do you have your pajamas on?”  {after the other two comments earlier in the week i was speechless and had no reply}

So to say I have been hit in the self esteem from my children’s honesty this week would be a fair statement.  I mean, i think for the most part they were being very observant {though i am still not convinced i looked like i was in my pj’s in that dress} but i am hoping they develop their social filter soon – for my sake.

::Have your kids ever said anything ‘observant’ like that to you?::

Oh I’m all too familiar with the innocent observations of children – most days my butt is huge and my boobs are their pillows. And I suppose to them, it’s true. ;-)

I get the squishy belly comment a lot. The worst was the comment made last night. My sister-in-law is watching my kids today because I have no baby sitter. At first I told the kids that I would probably have to take the day off to be home with them and they were super excited. My SiL called and said that she would watch them for me so I could go to work. After I told this to the kids my son looked at me and said, “No offense mom but I would rather have her watch us than you.” I replied, “No offense buddy but that was offensive.” :(

oh :( that one hurts! I am sure he didnt really mean it in that she is ‘better’ then you – but she probably lets them get away with more then you do being their mom.

Well, at least you know their comments are not coming from a mean place if that helps any at all…?

I don’t have kids, so I don’t have anything to contribute here. Lol

yes – thankful they are just ‘painfully honest’ and not ‘painfully mean’ :)

Lol. Yes, I feel you on this. My 2yr old pointed to the tattoo on my back and said, “Yucky, dirty” and my 4yr old recently asked me why I had spots all over my face. I had to explain to him that I still struggle with acne.

Those comments hurt dont they – but i also find they can be sweet too with their random compliments.

Kids. They have no idea what they are saying sometimes but it’s hard as a parent because we do. My daughter has said many things like this to me before. I try to just brush them off. Not always easy to do.

it helps me knowing that they are just being ‘observant’ and not coming from a mean place – but on those days where i am already feeling self conscious – they can hurt.

Oh yes! I’ve been the lovely recipient of several comments. Like, “MOM!! You have HUGE BOO-BOO’s (breasts). Or the “do you have ANOTHER baby in your tummy?” right after I gave birth!

But I try my best to focus on the nice things they say even though they aren’t as frequent. My boys will tell me every now and then when I get all dress up for a Girls Night Out or date night that I look pretty! I cling to those comments, even if it is just by my fingernails!

The boy is just starting to string words together, but I’m sure once the sentences emerge, I’ll have some of these startling moments to live through as well. It’s amazing how their innocence can manage to be both enjoyable and annoying at different times!

I think my all time fave was when Violet was about 2 and kept saying ‘bums a mess’ and I *thought* she was telling me she had messed herself. Uhm, not so much. She was pointing out the cellulite on my bum. Awe.some.
