I’m a Proud Theta Mom!

October 22, 2010

Hello Theta Moms! My name is Devan and I am a stay at home mom to three beautiful kids (aged 4, 3 &1) and a wife to an amazing and supportive man who has been my sweetheart since high school. I started Accustomed Chaos in January 2010 to create a space that was just for me – where I could write my thoughts and share my passions; a little of everything.

We live in a gluten free household because both myself and 3 year old daughter have Celiac Disease – an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten and in order to keep us safe my other two children and my husband eat gluten free as well.  When I was first diagnosed 4 years ago I was lost on what I can eat and thought my life of loving food was over.  Over the years I have really come to realize that I am not missing out at all and love sharing my recipes and favourite gluten free products.  Gluten free versions of Oreo-type cookies, lasagna, chicken fingers and lemon meringue pie – all possible and delicious!

How The Media Is Making Things Worse For Celiac Disease

The road to motherhood has not been easy for me and I use my blog as a safe place to work through the grief left by my 10 miscarriages.  The support from my readers and fellow bloggers has meant more to me then I can express and I never knew how much e-hugs would help in my journey.  I use Accustomed Chaos and my story to break the silence of miscarriage and bring this taboo topic into the light.

My Journey Through 10 Miscarriages

I am also a passionate attachment parent and breastfeeding advocate.  I have been breastfeeding my youngest now for 20 months and would like to continue until she plans to wean.  What you wont find here on Accustomed Chaos is any judgment or bashing of any kind – especially when it comes to breastfeeding vs formula. I am a strong believer in informed choice – whatever that choice is.

Breastfeeding Advocacy vs Formula Bashing

I am all about keeping it real and honest.  I am accustomed to the chaos of children and all that comes with it. I don’t pretend to be perfect and I do my best to cherish these moments – even the crazy ones  – because time goes way too quickly.

Taking Off The Mommy Mask

Blogging and the Theta Mom community has been so supportive of me and I love what Heather has built up. I had the opportunity to meet Theta Mom in person at BlogHer this summer and she is even more lovely in person!  Thank you to Heather for all your support and thank you fellow Theta Moms!

Hi Devan! Nice to meet you! Wow, I endured the pain of one miscarriage. I can't imagine going through 10 of them. You are one strong woman! So glad to know you now have three beautiful children.

I have a friend who has Celiac Disease, and through her I have learned there are lots of delicious gluten-free recipes out there. I enjoy trying them out.

Congrats on being the TMC featured blogger!

Hi there
Always loving on Heather's choices, and yours struck a chord.
I went thro several miscarriages after my first baby was born (we were fortunate to have her right before our third anniversary while not even trying to get pregnant) After every test in the book, drugs, ivf, icsi, the works, we adopted our youngest. Only after a scan showed bone loss, osteoarthritis, allergies seeming crazy, did anyone mention gluten or dairy allergies. Now I am making sure my almost 13 yr old is checked out, since I don't want her to go thro infertility one day. its so not spoken about as an issue for infertility – glad you are bringing attention to it too.
Hello and have a great weekend … and congrats on your feature btw :)

Congrats on being the featured blogger this week! I read your posts on breastfeeding and taking off the mom mask…I couldn't agree more! I nursed both my boys, and I was a SAHM for several years…now I'm a working mom, college student, and we homeschool our kids…nothing drives me crazier than hearing other moms bash each other's choices. I love your approach! Following you now here and on Twitter. Enjoy your day!

Congrats on being featured on ThetaMom! Absolutely awesome!

I'm always so amazed when I hear about the different journeys that women have gone through. It's amazing to see that, in the end, they are even stronger because of their experiences and that their trials absolutely do not bring them down.

Good luck on your journey.

Congrats on being featured!! I love your philosophy on 'informed choices' on the whole breasts vs. Bottle issue. I breastfed my oldest until he was 2 & 1/2 and am now bf-ing my youngest (she's 4 months). My sister has bottle fed both her babies and at first it was a struggle for ME to accept it because I love the bonding & I've learned to let go of MY issues lol can't wait to read more from you and I hope you'll come visit me to!

Congrats of being the featured Theta mom!

I didn't know that there were gluten free oreo-type cookies. That is good. Oreos are en essential part of my diet.

Happy to have discovered your blog via Theta Mom. Going to check out your recipes! We're not gluten free but we do deal with multiple food allergies so I'm always on the look out for new recipes to try. You're right in that its hard to eliminate foods from your diet but it does get easier with time and when others share how they're doing it. Thanks!

I know I have been here before! You and I talked a while back about Gluten because my son has Autism and you had some great tips for me. I also remember that it was the first time I had heard of Celiac disease. I love your honesty and that you are you through and through. Congrats on being featured. I look forward to coming back now that I found you…again!

I've been living gluten free for 5 years since being diagnosed Celiac as well. Unfortunately the diagnosis couldn't come fast enough as I ended up in the hospital for blood and iron transfusions…but now that we know, there's no turning back, and I'm the healthiest I've ever been. What a great feeling to know right?

Thanks for all the wonderful recipes, and fantastic posts. Your blog is one I look forward to reading.

Cheers,
Alissa

Stopping by… catching up on my must read blogs, including Theta Mom.

Not technically part of the community because my blog is still trying to find its focus and frequency… but feel very much a part because I visit the ThetaMom of the week every week :)

Congrats on the honor! Looking forward to reading more about you, your kids and your recipes :)
