I Am Doing Something Crazy This Morning…

December 6, 2010

Friends, today I am doing something so out of the ordinary.  Like crazy in my world on a few points.
1.  I am getting up earlier then I have to.
2.  I am going out of the house without the kids.
3. I am going RUNNING
Oh the thought of it horrifies me. I don’t run. Ever.  I walk a lot every day with the three kids- taking them everywhere in my Moby Wrap and/or our double stroller (my “Car”) but running … never.  I am more of a swimmer or exercise biker.
I have always been jealous of the people I see each morning pounding their feet on the pavement. Peaceful. It looks really peaceful.  Nothing but your own feet and some comfortable shoes and maybe some motivational music.  I have always wanted that.
My brother is coming with me. Bright {well, not likely bright} and early.  I will be attempting my first run. In the winter. In the cold and I am excited and nervous.  Starting slow & I am not making any promises to continue but the goal is to go 3 times a week.  It will probably be laughable but I can only get better {well, unless my knee craps out on me} and I could really use the stress release and quiet time.
:: Did I mention that it will be snowing 5cm (2″) tonight? ::

Wish me luck & if you have any tips for a new, first time runner/jogger I would love if you could impart some of your wisdom!

That's awesome! Yay for you! Can't wait to hear how it went! I'm so proud of you. OK, my advice, take it slow and ease into it. Make sure you stretch/warm-up before you go out and stretch when you come back. Don't be afraid to go slow and take breaks as you need them. Make sure you're hydrated before you go out and eat something small when you get back. Oh, and since it's cold, dress in layers because you'll need it all when you start out but might want to take something off when you get going. And good shoes! Invest in a pair of good shoes :) Hope you have fun!

Good luck! I started running last year and completed my first and second 5ks this year! It feels wonderful and you can get a lot of thinking done :) As for tips, make sure you have good sneakers, start slow and work yourself up. I started doing run/walk intervals. Then my running intervals became longer and my walking intervals became shorter. Have fun!!

Oh try the couch-2-5k plan on active.com. If that doesn't work with your schedule at least find a beginner plan so you don't have to worry about how far, how long, how fast, how often…etc.

Good luck!

Good for you. Not the best time of year to start running, but at least you're doing it. Its something fun you and your brother can do together, which makes it even better. Remember, the running will be hard at the beginning, but once you get good at it, you will feel so so good!

OMG good for you! I have been wanting to get back to working out forever and make every excuse in the book. I think I just need to suck it up and do it for myself. You are giving me the motivation!
