A guest post series from some of my favourite bloggers talking about blogging and their life. This week we have Heather from Theta Mom ®:
******
Why did you start blogging?:
I started my blog shortly after the birth of my second child. At the time, even though I was working from home and contributing to the family income, I felt caught between two different worlds; somewhere between the steadfast career that I left behind and the “new” woman trying to find herself with the role of mother added to her resume again. I knew there had to be other women experiencing the same things that I was going through which is very the moment I began to write – and once I did, my blog was born.
What have you learned about life through blogging?:
I’ve learned that blogging is a lot like life – it’s what you make of it. The more active you are in this community, the more you will get out of it. The more you write, the better your writing will become. The more you network and put your name out there, the more others will respond to you. In essence, you get out of it what you put into it. I’ve also learned that blogging should remain rewarding and fun – and just as in real life, not everyone will agree with you but as long as you stay true to who YOU are on your blog and in the social media space, the rest should fall into place.
What have you been most surprised about regarding blogging?:
I’ve been amazed at how supportive the blogging community is. I have seen firsthand when bloggers unite for a specific cause or kick-off a campaign that supports a particular mission. Or it’s the simple, “I loved your post…I totally understand what you said…You are not alone….,” kind of tweets and comments that make a blogger feel validated, that what we are writing is truly resonating with readers. I’m also amazed at the genuine connections made through blogging. Blog friends ARE real. Anyone that has “met” someone online through their blog first and then met that person in real life can certainly testify to that.
Any tips/tricks insider info for those interested in starting their own blog?:
Be passionate about the things you blog about and continue to write for yourself first. Staying true to who you are will shine through and readers will appreciate that. I also encourage new bloggers to reach out to others when they have questions and not feel intimidated by those who have been around longer. We were all newbies at some point, so it’s all about support. Blogging shouldn’t be a competition – instead, we should be asking each other how we could collaborate to make this community and this space even more empowering and rewarding.
