The countdown is on for me and it’s started for many of you already – back-to-school time! This year I am a little more nervous about the start of a new routine because it’s the first year all three of my kids will be going. Both Speed and Raru are going every day, entering into Grade 2 and Grade 1, while Bean starts her first year at Junior Kindergarten going 2 times a week, full day.
For the first time in a LOOOOONG time, I will be alone at home and it’s going to be quiet and weird and take some getting used to. Only for a few months because Baby S will be keeping me company in December, but until then — 2 times a week I will be out of the daily noise and chaos while the three kids are learning and growing, and hopefully having fun.
Not only is that a memorable occasion, but for the first time EVAH my girls’ got their hair cut. Speed has been getting his haircut for a long time now, but Raru (who’s turning 7 soon) and Bean (who is turning 5 soon) had never had their hair cut before — until last night.
We’ve been talking about it for a long time — what they want to do. Raru is a very fashionable and adventurous person so I knew she would probably want to do something a little on the funkier side. It’s their hair and within very lax bounds, we let them choose what they want to do. Raru fell in love with the popular side-shave hair cut with long hair and Bean has always wanted her hair short.
Last night we took the jump and the girls got exactly what they wanted!
Raru went with what she had been eyeballing for a long time. We didn’t shave off as much as she had originally though to, with the intention of going back for more off if she wanted. Since she’s never had her hair cut ever, to shave part of her head was pretty ballsy of her — but she LOOOVES it! As with our back-to-school tradition, we will be putting coloured purple streaks in her hair as well.
Bean has this thing where she wants to be “cute” and her idea of cute is short hair — not long hair. When we caught her a few days ago with blonde hair all over her bed and scissors, when I asked why she had cut her hair — she cried and said she was “supposed to have short hair” — and who am I to deny her that?
I think she really wanted to go way short, but we decided to cut a lot off, but not that much. Again, with the intention of going back if she wanted it shorter still. There are days where she wants to look like her older sister, who still has really long hair — so we didn’t want the shock to be too big. She was amazing sitting in the salon chair and rocks the new look.
Just like her older sister, we will be putting coloured streaks in her hair (semi-perm), as per her request, but she really wants green — her favourite colour. I’m surprised with how much older she looks with her hair cut this way. She loves it, feels girly, cute, and more like herself. She was very specific that she wanted her bangs to cover her eyes, so they’re on the longer side, but perfect for her.
