A Date Night With The Husband

July 15, 2011

This past weekend my husband and I celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary.  7 years we have been married.  12 years since our first date, 3 children & tough times and yet it still feels like we are the cute 17& 18 year olds we were when we met.

I’m sure we are the most boring people on the planet.  Our typical ‘hang out’ night consists of watching some tv show and working on our computers at the same time. When we noticed our anniversary was coming up we were trying to think of what to do. Nothing was coming to mind – we were blank.  We wanted to do something though, anything.

We decided to kind of do nothing really. We were going to go out and do things without the kids and try our best not to talk about the children {we failed}.  Saturday night my husband wanted to do something we did when we were younger – before children.

We called our babysitter over (thanks to the kids Uncle P!) and that night we went to a local bar and got a few drinks.  Our intention was to have ‘a little too much‘ and then take the hour long walk home. Despite our best efforts we were not able to get as tipsy as we hoped but our time at the bar was great.  Just the two of us – talking – no computers, no work & no kids to interrupt us.

Our walk home was great. The weather was beautiful – not too hot and not too cold – and we had a lot of laughter.  It was like we were younger & did the silly fun stuff we remember doing.

The next day our date was continued.  Big P had spend the night with my parents and Uncle P has stayed over and was willing to watch the girls so my husband and i could continue our date the next afternoon.  It was full of not a whole lot – but the BEST part was it was quiet, we had adult conversation, we laughted and we didn’t have to rush anywhere.

We started getting coffee and a business meeting for Unspoken Grief (i know, no work but it was nice to fit that in) then we generally did nothing. Walked around some stores, laughed some more and then went and ate dinner at a restaurant.

The whole night before and the Sunday after was perfect. We talked about the kids a bit and bought them a few things but overall we did great.  There was no rushing to pick them up, no calling to check in on them.

We just enjoyed each others company.

Awww, I love that! It’s always great to remember what it’s like being a couple instead of ‘mommy & daddy’. My husband and I try to do the same thing – we even attempted to get an official Date Night going – but it gets tough when child care is an issue, or when we’re both tired from everything! LOL! Glad to hear you and your husband had a great time! I hope you all get to have more evenings like that!

Oh, and thanks for stopping by my blog today! I appreciate it! Hope your Friday is going well!

I totally hear you Jennifer! we rarely go out of the house for date nights because sometimes the coordinating babysitters and deciding what to do is more work then we have the energy level for :)

The simplest things are always the best. It’s about the reconnecting, the just-the-two-of-us feeling. So glad you managed to get some time in for that!

Happy 7 years! I feel pretty confident than my husband and I could take down you two in the “boringest couple ever” contest. :)

Happy anniversary and seriously- what fun!

I love your ending about enjoying each other’s company. That’s kind of what it comes down to, isn’t it?

Great post!

Sounds like you had a lovely date! My husband and I do the same thing, sit in the living room watching TV together and surfing on our laptops.

We were too when I let my comment. Now he’s gone to bed and I could not get to sleep so I’m back up…surfing the interwebs and watching tv.
I’m a wild woman…gotta watch out for me.
